The other month, Justinmind Prototyper went ahead and split their pricing plans into two, with a paid pro and a free version. As a refresher, this is an advanced prototyping tool allowing for such things as rich interactions, data simulation, variable based and conditional rules (for both Mac OSX & Windows). They have also shared a few of their prototype examples online.

Prototyping. Gestural user interfaces may be the future, but we’re not quite comfortable with them yet--as users or designers. Their tactile simplicity makes them efficient once you get the hang of them, but their affordance-less, "pictures under glass" nature can make them inscrutable to first-time users.

Prototyping. Prototyping at Rock Health
This week, consultants from Cooper met with folks at RockHealth to discuss prototyping. Jim Dibble, Faith Bolliger, Peter Duyan, and Martina Maleike talked about tools available for creating both low-fidelity and high-fidelity prototypes. Prototypes are tools to foster communication around the proposed product.

Prototyping. Imagine two designers. One is really imaginative and inventive, but hasn’t spent any time learning how to use any of the prototyping tools available today. The other has mastered multiple prototyping techniques quite proficiently, but isn’t particularly imaginative or inventive.
Which one would more likely produce a portfolio of great designs over time? Our research suggests the proficient prototyper will beat the innovator.

There is a bunch of articles out there that raise some of the problems, disadvantages and limits behind wireframing. Here are at least four such write ups that I’ve come across lately. Although many of the authors invoke “death” analogies, please don’t be put off as most articles are quite constructive. :) I doubt wireframes will disappear altogether, but instead are probably undergoing a transition of sorts.

ProtoShare has recently gone live with the next version of their online prototyping app. The latest version of the tool takes design conversation to the next level by introducing topics. For one, topics are conversation placeholders which can be pinned to a page. More importantly however, topics can also be subscribed / unsubscribed from by various team members.

Prototyping. This is a blog post about a type of work we find successful – namely, video prototyping – and why we think it’s valuable.
We’ve made quite a few films in the last couple of years, that have had some success – in how they describe products, technologies and contexts of their use in public.

Here comes InVision, a simple click-through prototype building app. The tool itself is pretty light (in a good way) in that you do not design the actual pages in InVision. Instead, the idea is to design your screens in your other weapons of choice (Fireworks, Illustrator, Balsamiq, Photoshop etc. ) and then upload them into InVision.

Mobile design. Ask anyone involved in making applications as a developer or a customer: Would you like to see how the app looks and behaves before we actually build it? The answer is an overwhelming yes. We humans are very visual. For us, to understand something better, we would rather look at a prototype than just read a description. That’s exactly why prototyping is hugely important today.

Prototyping. One of the things that slightly bugs me about Omnigraffle is that it doesn't have built-in objects for basic HTML form elements that behave like real ones. I would love to have these to add a little more realism to my wireframes and possibly extend them to work inside of a more full-on prototype with "real" forms.

The goal of preparing wireframes is to solve design challenges regarding layout, and priority. This is usually done in wireframes through experimenting with layouts and the application of contrast, similarity and some other principles.
By applying the Gestalt principles to your components, you can quickly prepare concepts.

Yesterday, while observing teams in our prototyping workshop, we noticed that the prototypes fell into two basic categories: open and closed.

“Why not create a design artifact that is not disposable, but instead, one your team can convert to actual production code?”
Within many companies, the use of wireframes in user experience design can be a contentious issue. People typically think of wireframes simply as artifacts designers create when generating design concepts, then later discard.

This week I was shocked with the inventive but pragmatic application of Keynote as a prototyping tool for iPad.

Prototyping. People swear by their design processes. Rachel Glaves insists on sketching by hand; Dan Brown urges extensive wireframing; while Ryan Singer goes straight to HTML. Heated debates arise at conferences as advocates staunchly defend their favorite techniques. With all of these different methods to choose from, should you be sketching, wireframing, mocking-up, or prototyping? The answer, simply put, is yes you should.
