Sticky Jots

Prototyping. Sticky Jots is a set of storytelling sticky note paper and paper prototyping kits for designing mobile and tablet interfaces. The product is designed by Rae Milne and Pamela Jue, two grad students in the SVA Interaction Design program. Pam writes about the thinking behind Sticky Jots. The idea came from our constant prototyping and ideation process in almost every project this semester.

Converting The Prototype: iOS Prototyping With Adobe Fireworks And TAP (Part 3)

Prototyping.    In the previous parts of this tutorial (part 1 and part 2), we looked in detail at the building blocks of our design in Fireworks (pages, shared layers, symbols, styles), and we started to make a demo prototype in Fireworks. The demo prototype had six pages, linked together by hotspots, and each hotspot was customized for use with TAP.

Design Your App on Paper, Animate It With Your iPhone Camera

Mobile design. A new app called POP (Prototyping on Paper) lets designers iterate fast in their sketchbooks, then interactively link those sketches together to test them. In the digital age, paper is anything but dead. Designers can use "paper prototypes" to experiment with UI designs fast and even (as in the case of Clear, a gestural iPhone app) reveal innovative user interactions.

UIEtips: The Power of Sketches: How We Sold a Huge Project Shift with 5 Index Cards

Prototyping. In this week’s UIEtips, Nathan Curtis will share how he shifted the design direction of a large project with just 5 index cards. Here’s an excerpt from the article The concept was a dramatic shift from anything prototyped, discussed, or even sketched during the studio. It was safe to say: the client had never seen this before.

Ditch Traditional Wireframes

Prototyping. Wireframes have played an increasingly leading role in the modern Web development process. They provide a simple way of validating user interface and layout and are cheaper and faster to produce than a final visual comp. However, most of the methods and techniques used to create them are far from being efficient, contradicting the principles and values that made wireframing useful in first place.

Responsive design with paper

Mobile design. A few months ago, I spoke at City University London about Wireframing for Responsive Web Design where I proposed that paper could be a useful tool for responsive design. Since then, I haven’t had many chances to try the technique I proposed hands-on, but a suitable opportunity came up recently when we decided to look into making our own Webcredible site more responsive.

Announcing Solidify: A New User Testing and Prototyping App

Prototyping. Feedback is an essential part of what we do at ZURB on a daily basis. Giving and getting valuable feedback is always better with the option to touch and feel a design. Having something that users can interact with can only make it easier to see if your designs will fly out in the wild. Which is why we're super excited today to introduce Solidify, the third major app in our product suite that lets you create clickable prototypes for user testing.

Moqups: HTML5-Based Mockups On Steroids

Prototyping.    Before you detail the design of your next website project you need to determine where should be what. You will have to place your navigation, images, texts, forms, whatever will be part of your site. Especially essential parts such as the navigational concept have to be planned very thoroughly. The information architecture decides if your project will be usable or not.

Tips on Prototyping for Usability Testing

Prototyping. By Jim Ross Published: October 8, 2012 “The most effective research techniques involve observing participants doing things and talking about what they’re doing. … Therefore, the best way to evaluate a new design is to create a prototype and give participants something concrete to interact with and react to.

Wireframing Tool Showdown!

Prototyping. At this point in time, wireframing has established itself as a critical component in every designer or developer’s process. Hopefully that's the case, anyway. Whether you're part of a global agency superpower or operating as a solo code-slinger, the concept of visually outlining the information and interaction of your site before you start designing or coding has probably found its way into your workflow in some form.

(Why) Is UXD the Blocker in Your Agile UCD Environment?

Design process. By Ritch Macefield Published: September 3, 2012 “UCD has a lot in common with agile. Both encourage a multidisciplinary approach, are iterative, encourage feedback, discourage bloated and overly rigid documentation, and value people over processes. ” Many organizations are moving from waterfall to agile software development methods. They often combine this shift with a move to user-centered design (UCD).

Nathan Curtis – Prototyping with HTML and CSS

Prototyping. [ Transcript Available ] Prototyping is an effective way to communicate design ideas. Static PDFs, PSDs, and wireframes can help get your point across but aren’t dynamic. Usually, any necessary changes are logged away as to-dos. They’re then taken back, fixed, and presented again.

Prototyping Proportion for Windows 8

Prototyping. In preparation for a busy fall conference season, I’ve been furiously testing, retesting then codifying the methods I used to help brands prototype their Windows 8 app experiences. Afterwards each process trick gets a photo shoot (I’m not the best photographer, but the tripod helps).  Once I’ve paid the ideas due process, I can start putting them to words. What follows is a quick trick I discovered while tinkering with content proportioning.

Interactive Prototypes And Time-Savers With Adobe Fireworks

Prototyping.    As interface designers, we’re often required to demonstrate the look and feel (and interactions) of the interfaces we design. We often begin with a series of flat images, and while these may be pixel perfect and show some amazing detail, they lack the context of the user experience. Without context, it would be difficult for your clients to understand the flow of an app or website in the way you originally planned it.

Create Interactive Prototypes With Adobe Fireworks

Prototyping.    Whilst designing for screens—including Web, mobile and rich interaction applications (RIAs)—you often need to create a prototype to see whether the application works properly before moving onto the development stage. Prototypes are also essential in Web projects. For example, when you plan an online ordering process, you have to be sure that every step is correct and that no critical elements are missing.
